The Scene subculture, which, as we all know, emerged in the early 2000s as an offshoot of emo and hardcore, has frequently been dismissed as a "POSER" subculture. A poser subculture, by definition, is a superficial imitation of alternative aesthetics without genuine roots of any sort. A deeper examination reveals that Scene is not a poser subculture: it is, but rather, an EVOLUTION of underground music and fashion. How? well, you see...
Firstly, Groups like Eighteen Visions, Atreyu, The Blood Brothers, The Nation of Ulysses, Bleeding Through, etc. pioneered the exact same aesthetic that would define Scene (dyed hair, tight clothing, eyeliner, androgynous fashion in general). This was a rebellion against hypermasculine hardcore fashion (the hardcore tough guy attire). Bands like The Blood Brothers incorporated effeminate vocals.

i think people often forget that the scene really evolved out of the SXE/ FASHIONCORE movement -- which is an ironic name for a bunch of christian kids who just wear girls jeans and t-shirts. the whole 'clique' mentality is very evident here, where dressing the same, straying from drugs/alcohol, and only hanging out with kids who are morally on the same page is integral - and it naturally leant it self to all of the subgroups that would ensue. These are the kids who are often considered 'emo' though the music and mentality tends to differ in a lot of respects (originally of course.) Norma Jean is the staple hardcore/fashion core band:

Unlike poser movements, Scene kids attended local shows and formed bands.
A poser subculture lacks musical substance. Scene does not. Its sound is a fusion of underground genres. Metalcore, Post-HxC, Deathcore, Nintendocore, you name it...
Scene had local shows, developed its own slang, art styles, and online communities... Also, online communities through platforms like MySpace, Stickam, Bebo, Hi5, Xanga, Fotolog, Metroflog and YouTube helped Scene evolve into an entire lifestyle.
So before you call Scene kids “posers" ask yourself, are you you just parroting what you’ve heard? True culture doesn’t always look how YOU expect it to... Sometimes it says Guns Go Bang Bang and Dinosaurs go Rawr, wears 20-inch long extensions, screams into a microphone...
